Super week 3

So here we are at the end of week 3 for ds106 and this was by far my favorite week. I am getting the hang of the assignments and what I have to do each week (finally!)This weeks assignments we had to learn about superheroes and their origins and what makes a superhero.  These are some of my favorite topics.  I feel like a kid going into Disney World for the first time when I talk about superheroes and I am glad i got to share some of my ideas that I had.  I felt like I had so many ideas beforehand but I never had a platform or a reason to do so.  But now I am satisfied. I still am a little behind on schedule due to struggles with the blog site but I am not worried, I should be back on top of things in no time!

Most Chill Superhero

My super hero is Benneth Kranagh, also known as Mellow man and he is the most chill guy on Earth.  So chill that he has a power to make everyone around him chill in times of need.  It all started when he was born on his home planet of Vibranius where they worshipped the Vibe Gods and they were good to them.  There on Vibranius, there was no bad vibes ever.  Everyone did their own thing and had a good time doing it.  One day, a person that now goes by the name of Sinister Psycho, went crazy and started destroying everything.  The planet vibranius started falling apart due to the lack of chillness and relaxation.  No one survived except for Benneth because that day he was out riding the waves when the Vibranius started the collapse.  A huge crack in the planet sent the wave crashing down hard and it sent Benneth flying out into space.  He would have died if not for the if it wasn’t for the Vibe Gods who granted him magical powers that allowed him the relax himself and breathe in space without and oxygen and many other powers which includes the ability to chill out everything around him.  So there he floated in space until he came into Earth’s atmosphere and landed in the water on the west coast in the US.  Here, he just relaxes like he did on his own planet but feels as if he owes this planet a debt of gratitude so he uses his powers for good and helps the people of Earth in need.  He mastered tai chi and other fighting styles here on Earth just in case Sinister Psycho ever finds him.

Day In The Life of Shadow Fly

The alarm goes off in the early morning.  I hate mornings. I hit the snooze once, twice, and get up on the third one.  I wonder why I put myself through this, always crime fighting at night and waking up in the early morning to live a normal life with a normal job.  I look up and remind myself why I do what I do.  I see a poster of my favorite hero, Mr. Man.  He the reason why I have these powers and the reason why I fight crime.  I get up and look in the mirror and tell myself “You are Shadow Fly. This is what you want. This is what I will do.”

On my way to work, the sun is beating on me.  I hate the sun. I Prefer the shadows where I can totally mask myself. In the sun, I feel completely vulnerable.  I cast a little shadow above me the shade myself from the sun. Much better. I go to work at a job that doesn’t pay much but it doesn’t matter anyways. I normally finish my work early and then listen to the news to see if any juicy stories are on or if any “villain” is on the loose.  I hear the broadcaster say “You are going to want to stay indoors tonight.  There is a kidnapper on the loose that just escaped from jail. Lock your doors if you live on the west end of the great city of Boomtown. Thank you.” I found my target.

After work, I immediately head over to the west end of Boomtown and patiently wait. I am consumed in the shadows so no one can see or hear me.  I see a man under a street lamp reading a newspaper and a woman walks by and she catches his eye. as she passes, he gets up and starts to follow her.  I notice his face, its him I quickly fly through the shadows to end up right behind them.  As he tails her, I tail him and we go into the subway.  She notices that the man is following her so she speeds up and he proceeds to go quicker as well. Just as she turns around to scream at him and tell him to go away, he’s gone.  I grabbed him and have him in my shadows and he says, “Look man, I Don’t want any trouble. Just leave me alone!” “You already brought the trouble,” I say to him.

I hang him up above the lamp post outside of the police station and he is completely naked and completely embarrassed thanks to my acid spit that melted off his clothes.  After he was taken care of, I quickly fly into the shadows to the top of the tallest building in Boomtown.  Here I listen for any other signs of distress and I wait through the night in the shadows just waiting for someone to test my abilities.  And when that is over I go back home and start my day all over again.

Vonnegut’s Ideas are actually true!

It is true that most heroes have a tragic event in their life where they are on the bottom end of the fortune graph that is part of Kurt Vonnegut’s Shapes of Stories outline.  Their story starts off particularly sad where something bad has happened to them but throughout the story their good fortune builds up until it becomes completely an infinite wealth good fortune by the end of the story.  Take Superman for example; when he was born, he lost his parents and sent off into an unknown world where he doesn’t quite fit in.  Later, he learns that he can be a beacon of hope for the people and everything is better now.  Another example is Batman where he is in a similar boat as Superman where he loses his parents and becomes alone. Or even Naruto (for you anime fans) because he grows up alone without family or friends and goes through the hardships of life but soon achieves his ultimate goal of becoming the leader of his village.  These stories all started off in very bad fortune and ends at the top of the Shapes of Stories’ scale.  These factors make for a good story that people want to hear and really develop characters into the heroes we know and love.

What makes a Superhero a… Superhero

When reading the article/ interview “How Ancient Legends Gave Birth To Modern Superheroes” by Evan Narcisse who interviewed Jess Nevins, I got a better grasp on what a superhero is and who might be classified as one.  After reading it, I have realized that it does not matter whether you wear a cape or normal clothes, whether you have a secret name or use your normal name.  The word superhero was not around mainly until superman came out but these nowadays superheroes are based off of past people and they were not considered superheroes but they easily can be.  It really boils down to how epic they were in the time that they were around or how epic their story was told, and what their intentions are. What I noticed as a reoccurring theme in a superhero is their intention to overcome a difficult adversity that could endanger other lives or their own. After watching The Tick’s first episode, it became obvious that in that world there were many costumed heroes who seemed to be all do-gooders.  They, by my own personal definition, are all superheroes because they all want to do something epic.

Who Said What

Assignment-Find a picture of any secret agent you would like, preferrably a fairly well-known one. Next, pick a quote from a similar secret agent character. Finally, attribute said quote to a third similar character. You want the characters you chose to be well-known but also similar enough that people would confuse them with one another.

So I decided to go with the classic and arguably greatest secret agent of all time, James bond.  The quote is from Men in Black 3 and it was said by Agent J, the secret agent alien crime fighter.  I also associated James Bond with this quote because if not Agent J saying that quote, the other person that could say it and still sound cool would be the one and only James Bond. I got the picture from https://sixtiescity.net/Mbeat/mbfilms43.htm

and I used paint to write the quote.

Thank you for reading and hopefully enjoying.

Creating my blog and following through for class

Well signing up for my class blog took quite a bit of time.  I’m not tech savvy by any means so I’m glad that it was step by step.  Also, definitely was not expecting the class to have so much to it, but I am willing to stick with it because I am very interested.  Right off the bat I can tell this class is going to take up a good portion of my free time so I am going to have to be better at time management which is one of my weak points.  All in all I am excited to see how this class plays out!
